Coupling aerial and detector circuits; thermionic amplifiers and detectors; tuning apparatus, control of.-In a receiver of the heterodyne type the signals are passed through a filter before the local oscillations are superimposed upon them so that the required beat frequency can be obtained only with signals of the desired frequency. Fig. 3 shows a supersonic receiver in which the tuning condenser 22, the filter condensers 24, and the local oscillator condenser 28 are simultaneously adjusted. The output from the filter C is applied to an amplifying valve 25 the output of which is applied through condenser 27<1> to the grid of detecting and oscillating valve 26. The output of valve 26 is reflexed back through transformer 29 to the valve 25 for which the output is transformer 33. The filter C may be of the high-pass, low-pass or band type and the heterodyne frequency is so arranged that according as the filter is high-pass or low-pass this frequency is below or above the signal frequency so that an interfering signal which will produce the same beat frequency is cut off by the filter. In modifications separate and auto-heterodynes are employed to produce a beat note directly.
