279,484. Maschinenfabrik Esslingen. Oct. 21, 1926, [Convention date]. Variable-speed toothed gearing. - The driving shaft of a locomotive is driven direct from an internal-combustion engine at normal speeds, but at starting, and at slow speeds, is driven through reducing gear. A gear wheel 3 fast on the engine crank shaft is connected at top speed by a clutch 19 direct to the wheel 12 carrying the cranks 13, 14 for the driving wheel coupling rods. At starting the drive is from the wheel 3 through wheels 4, 5, clutch 6, shaft 7, wheels 8, 9. and 10 on to the wheel 12. For slow running the clutch 6 is opened and the clutch 18 closed, the train then being from the wheel 3 through the wherel 4, shaft 20, clutch 18, and wheel 10 to the wheel 12. At top speed both clutches 6 and 18 are open. Friction clutches may be used. The crank shaft and the shaft carrying the wheel 12 and shanks 13, 14 are coaxial.
