Thermionic heterodyne receivers.-The oscillating valve 2 of a superheterodyne or like receiver is tuned to the same frequency as the receiving valve 3 and is modulated at the required intermediate or secondary frequency. The tuning circuits of the two valves are mechanically coupled to permit simultaneous tuning. The valve 2 is modulated by feeding to its anode oscillations from a valve 1 tuned to the intermediate frequency. As shown, the received and local frequencies are combined in the aerial circuit 6 of the receiving valve. Alternatively, the combination may be made in the anode circuit of a valve having a second grid or plate. Valves 1, 2 may be replaced by a single valve, having more than three electrodes or by a three-electrode valve oscillating at the received and intermediate frequency.
