Abstract

279,045. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. Oct. 18, 1926, [Convention date]. Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus. - Each anode of a multi-anode vapour rectifier is associated with a grid or equivalent device so connected and arranged that in the event of back ignition a potential is impressed upon the grids which causes the current in all the anode circuits to be interrupted. As shown in Fig. 1, the grids may be in the form of conducting bands 5, 6 surrounding the limbs 11, 12 of the container in which the anodes 2, 3 are disposed. The anode current is interrupted in the event of back ignition by connecting the grids through switches 8, 9 to the ends of the secondary winding 1 of the supply transformer in reversed relationship to the anode connections so that a potential opposite, in phase to the anode potential is applied to the grids. A modification is described in which the anodes are disposed within insulating shields in a common casing, the grids being in the form of bands surrounding the and connected to the transformer secondary through current-limiting resistances. In another modification, the grids are in the form of a metallic sleeve surrounding the anodes, and auxiliary anodes are arranged in an exciter circuit to ensure re-ignition after the back ignition has been extinguished. In cases where the grids are exposed to the arc, direct passage of current to the grids may be prevented by embedding the grids in insulating material, for example, a coating of enamel.
