278,305. Dabeg Maschinenfabriks Akt.-Ges., (Assignees of Wicky, B.). Sept. 28, 1926, [Convention date]. Boxes combined with ball or roller bearings: stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; draining. - The trunnion of a steam-heated cylinder for paper mills &c. is provided with a packing surface supported by a concentric outer bearing in order to protect the packing from wear. The trunnion 5 is provided with an extension 6, the surface of which is packed by laybrinth rings, or other packing, carried by an extension of the steaminlet union 1. This extension is supported in a bearing 11 housed in an extension of the trunnion 5. Leakage steam passes to a space 9 and escapes by apertures 10. Condensation water escapes by a pipe 4, surrounded by a pipe 12 open at its outer end to the atmosphere and secured to the pipe 4 inside the steam cylinder. The space between the pipes 4 and 12 forms a heat insulation and damage to the pipes is indicated by escape of steam from the outer end of the pipe 12. Alternatively, steam may be admitted by the pipe 4, condensation water being led away by the union 1. A union may be provided at the other end of the cylinder for the escape of condensation water. In this case the pipe 4 may be omitted. The pipe 1 may extend inside the sleeve 6 the bearing 11 in that case being mounted on the sleeve 6.
