Abstract
321,179. United Kingdom Self-Adjusting Anti-Friction Metallic Packing Syndicate, Ltd., and Brooks, F. G. July 28, 1928. Packing, metallic.-Pairs of cast iron packing- rings D, in segments held together by garter springs D as described in Specification 268,013, are grouped within L-section cover rings E, the last of which has an extension e<1> supporting a spring S to press the rings together, the spring S abutting against an extended neck bush F located partly within the cylinder head and partly within the gland C. Joint rings c<3> maintain the gland tight against the cylinder head. The neck bush F is in halves pinned together and makes a joint f<4> with the cylinder head and allows the rings D to align themselves closely against the shaft. The segments of the adjacent rings D are pinned together to break joint. Holes f<5> are formed in the neck bush to assist in withdrawing the packing as a whole. A lubricating cup g' with siphon wick feed to an annular recessed lubrication sleeve G with absorbent pad in its interior is mounted on the shaft and lubricates the gland.
