Checking receipts.-In an electrical system for determining the highest bidder and the amount of the bid a pointer is caused to move over a series of increasing values so long as more than one bidder maintains his switch depressed and to be stopped when one bidder only remains in circuit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the pointer at W is stopped by a detent controlled by a magnet A. The double-pole bidders' switches D<1>, D<2> - - are connected up in series as shown and each controls also a relay switch DS<1>, DS<2> - - in the circuit of a second source LB. While more than one bidder's switch is depressed the circuit of the first source DB is incomplete and none of the relays is energized. When, however, one bidder only is holding his switch down, the circuit through the corresponding relay switch is made and a circuit from LB is completed through an indicating lamp L<1> - - an electromagnet AR and the magnet A. The pointer is thus stopped at the figure reached and the magnet AR breads the first circuit at V to render the bidders' switches ineffective. In other constructions the stopping of the pointer is effected by the diminution of current through the magnet A or a relay, owing to the retention in circuit of only one bidder's switch and its accompanying lamp or coil resistance. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4 the bidders' switches D', D<2>, D<3> control relays in circuit with lamps L<1> L<2>, L<3> and the lamp battery LB. Depression of two or more switches enables the relay AR to hold off the contact V but when one switch only is down the contact is closed to complete a circuit for the magnet A with consequent stoppage of the pointer.
