Abstract

781,379. Road-traffic signals on vheicles. C.A.V., Ltd. Aug. 12, 1955 [Sept. 1, 1954], No. 35373/54. Class 118 (2). A flashing-light direction signalling system for road vehicles comprises indicator lamps a on the left and right sides of the vehicle respectively and a selector switch c connected to battery through terminals b and in circuit with a flashing control apparatus comprising in combination a thermally-extensible wire d in series with the indicator lamps, a normally-open electromagnetically-operable switch h in parallel with said wire d, and a normally-open switch f responsive to extension of said wire d for controlling the excitation of the electromagnetically-operable switch h. The contacts fare carried respectively on a resilient strip i fixed at its end j and on an over-centre or snapaction spring strip k fixed at its end m and attached at the other end to the wire d by a glass or other electrically insulating bead n. A resistance e may be included in series with the wire d, and also the winding o of a second electromagnetically-operated switch p arranged to control the circuit of a pilot lamp q as shown. The winding g to operate the switch h is connected as shown. When the selector switch c is moved to the desired side current flows in wire d but not sufficient to light lamps a or operate switch p. When the wire d extends the switch f closes and winding g is energized to cause switch h to short-circuit the wire d and resistance e, thereby lighting lamps a and pilot lamp q. The wire d then cools and opens contacts f to cause the cycle to repeat. The frequency of flashing may be regulated by adjustment of the time of operation of the electromagnetically-operated switch h.
