Abstract

913,315. Mechanical switches without quickaction. SIGNAL-STAT CORPORATION. June 24, 1960, No. 22230/60. Class 38 (5). [Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXVIII] In a vehicle control switch having the functions " off," " parking light on," " headlights on" and comprising a rheostat for varying the illumination of the instrument panel lights, flare signalling (see Group XXXVIII), i.e. flashing of the parking, tail and instrument panel lights, can be effected by means of an extra contact on the rheostat which, in the position of minimum resistance of the latter and with the control switch " off," connects a battery and flasher unit to the " flare " signalling lamps. The push-pull switch 10 consists of a U-shaped frame 13 attached to an insulating base 12 and a contact-carrying slide 15 operated by rod 16, the slide being held in one of three positions by the engagement of button 46 with one of the notches 47 in the frame 13. A spring-loaded metal plate 40 carrying buttons 42-44 serves as the contact-making member of the switch. Contacts 331, 34<SP>1</SP> connected respectively via terminals 33, 34 to the tail and parking lamps have extension pieces which co-operate with buttons 44, 43 in the " off " position of the switch, so as to allow " flare " signalling to be accomplished. In the two " on " positions of the switch, button 42 engages contact 31<SP>11</SP> or 31<SP>1</SP> which are both connected via terminal 31 to the battery to allow normal operation of the parking and head lamps. A conducting strip 38 joins contacts 33, 31<SP>1</SP> to a fixed contact 30 which co-operates with a variable resistance element 26, rotatable by knob 21, to allow the instrument panel lamps to be varied in brilliance. A metal plate 50 is connected to the end of resistance element 26 which corresponds to a position of maximum brilliance and is engageable, in the latter position only, by a further fixed contact 55 connected via a flasher unit (Fig. 3, not shown), to a battery.
