Abstract

1,257,941. Mechanical switches. N.S.F. Ltd. 10 July, 1970 [10 July, 1969], No. 34842/69. Heading H1N. A switch has an actuating member 1 movable from a central neutral position in four directions at right angles to control flashing indicator lamps and head lamps of a vehicle. The actuator 1 is pivoted to a rotor 2 and co-operates with an indexing device 5 which permits the actuator to be moved downwards to a stable position or upwards to an unstable one from which it is returned by spring action. The actuator can also be moved from side to side to rotate the rotor 2 about a pin 7, the rotor 2 co-operating with indexing devices 8, 9 which permit the rotor to be turned in either direction first to an unstable position (determined by abutments 2m) and then to a stable one. When the actuator is moved upwards it depresses a rocker 19 allowing contacts 21, 22 to close to flash the main beam headlights; when it is moved downwards, rocker 19 is urged up by springs 20 to change over a contact 23 from a contact 28 (dipped headlights) to 21 (main beam). When the actuator is moved sideways it engages bridging contacts 13 with either 16 or 17 to operate direction indicators. (The second set of contacts 13, 15, 16, 17 may control parking lights). The two detents 8, 9 are released by a member 11 operated by the steering wheel to return the actuator from its stable positions. A horn button (not shown) is mounted at the end of the actuator and by a centre conductor 24 to terminal 25; the outer sheath of the actuator is earthed by contacts 26, 27.
