278,047. Johnson, J. Y., and I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges. May 31, 1926. Addition to 203,533. 2: 2<1>-Dibenzanthronyls are obtained by treating with alkaline condensing agents under moderate conditions mixtures of 2-halogenbenzanthrones with benzanthrones having a free 2-position. The reaction takes place more readily than that of the parent Specification and also renders possible the production of unsymmetrically substituted 2 : 2<1>-dibenzanthronyls. Any dyestuffs formed simultaneously may be extracted with alkaline hydrosulphite solution. According to examples the following compounds are produced :- (1) 2 : 2-dibenzanthronyl from benzanthrone and 2-chlorbenzanthrone by action of sodium anilide in aniline; (2) 6-methyl-2 : 2<1>-dibenzanthronyl from 2-chlorbenzanthrone (Specification 222,125) and 6-methylbenzanthrone by action of sodium anilide in aniline, or of isopropyl alcohol and caustic potash in toluene; (3) 6- or 7-chlor-2 : 2<1>- dihenzanthronyl from 2-chlorbenzanthrone and 6- or 7-chlorbenzanthrone; (4) 6-chlor-2: 2'-dibenzanthronvl from benzanthrone and 2 6-dichlorbenzanthrone in presence of potassium anilide; (5) 6 : 6<1>- or 7 : 7<1>-dichlor-2 : 2<1>-dibenzanthronyl from 2 : 6-dichlorbenzanthrone and 6- chlorbenzanthrone or 2 : 7-dichlorbenzanthrone and 7-chlorbenzanthrone. The condensations are carried out in a current of nitrogen. 2 : 6-Dichlor- and 2 : 7-dichlorbenzanthrones are respectively obtained by condensing 2 : 6- and 2 : 7-dichloranthraquinones with glycerol in presence of sulphuric acid and a reducing agent.
