Abstract
324,119. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 19, 1928. Indigoid dyes. - Water-soluble derivatives of indigoid dyestuffs are made by condensing indigoid dyestuffs containing a replaceable hydrogen atom attached to at least one nitrogen atom with a monosulphohalide of benzoic acid. The condensation is advantageously effected in the presence of an organic base. The products appear to be carboxylic amides containing free sulphonic groups, and may be used for dyeing or printing since they are readily converted into the parent dyestuffs on the fibre by the action of saponifying agents particularly alkalies. In examples (1) indigo is heated with benzoic acid m-sulphochloride in dry pyridine, the pyridine is distilled off, and the condensation product salted out with ammonium sulphate; the product is reconverted to indigo by dilute caustic soda at ordinary temperatures, while weaker alkalies, such as sodium carbonate, produce an intermediate compound, probably the monoacyl derivative, and (2) the condensation product from dibromisatin chloride and alpha-naphthol (Specification 7819/09, example A), subsequently brominated, is similarly treated with benzoic acid m-sulphochloride in pyridine. Other indigold dyestuffs, such as 5-bromindigo and 7 : 7<1>-dimethylindigo may be similarly treated, and other monosulphohalides of benzoic acid, such as the p-sulphochloride, may be used.
