Carbonizing-apparatus.-The charge from a hopper B passes into the upper compartments A of a heated retort and is moved along in thin films by agitators P to an openings d<1> through which it falls into a lower comparment C and is passed by agitators S to an outlet E. The vapours rise through a screen t<1> from which chains T hang loosely into the paths of the agitators P. The chains serve to retain in the reaction chamber dust and carbon formed bv decomposition of the vapours. The chains and the inner surfaces of the apparatus may be coated with catalytic materials, and catalytic screens J, J<1> may be placed in the vapour outlet pipes. Hydrogen may be supplied to the retort. Specification 224,568 is referred to.
