Abstract
277,404. Bianchi, A. E., and Guardabassi, G. June 8, 1926. Retorts.-In apparatus comprising a series of heated troughs with rotary agitators for the carbonaceous material passing therethrough, the troughs are provided with reticulated screens from which depend chains &c. capable of being vibrated by the agitators. The apparatus is particularly adapted for carrying out the process described in Specification 278,041. The material is supplied to the trough A, Fig. 2, by a hopper B and automatic rotary valve b'. A pair of shafts N, N<1>, Fig. 3, with inclined agitators P act on the material during its passage through the trough A to a smaller trough C located below it, the latter trough being provided with an agitator S. The treated material is discharged through an outlet E controlled by a rotary valve e<1>. A gas chamber F communicating with the trough A is provided with a reticulated screen t' from which hang a large number of small metal chains T of such length as to be vibrated by the agitators P. The chains T and other parts contacting with the vapours may be coated with a catalytic agent. or metallic oxide mixed with silicate jelly. The vapours given off from the material treated pass through the chain screen to twin longitudinal pipes H provided with filters and thence by means of pipes K<1> to a main offtake pipe.
