Abstract

253,641. Fisher, W. H., and Chambers, P. March 30, 1925. Cementation.-In apparatus for the cementation of iron or iron alloys by means of hydrocarbons, the latter is introduced into the furnace 1 by a nozzle 20 at the upper end of an annular member 17 mounted in the cap f of the retort chamber b so that the hydrocarbon is not vaporized before it reaches the chamber b in which the iron &c. is placed. The chamber b is heated bv the introduction of gas into the space 3 formed between the chamber b and the inner wall of the furnace 1. The iron &c. to be treated is placed on a table 9 which is supported by a member 10 having openings 11 and is provided with a central opening 12 through which is inserted a thermo-couple 28. The hydrocarbon is fed to the nozzle 20 by a pipe 22 from a tank 24, the amount being regulated by cooks 25, 26. The hydrocarbon used may be organic oils such as pine tar or other pyroligneous products, fish or vegetable oil. When it is desired to remove the iron &c. from the chamber b, gas is admitted from pipes 27 into the space below the table 9 and thus into the chamber, and then the cover f is removed.
