Abstract

171,750. Fisher, W. H., and Chambers, P. Aug. 13, 1920. Cementation.-Ferrous materials are carburized in a heated receptacle containing a hydrocarbon vapour generated by feeding into the work-holding receptacle a liquid hydrocarbon comprising pine tar and a solvent such as turpentine and, if desired, linseed oil, the most suitable proportions by volume being 40 per cent of pine tar, 10 per cent turpentine and 40 per cent linseed oil. In the apparatus shown, the work is placed on a perforated stand 26 in the receptacle D, which is heated by burners 10 in the surrounding heating space 15. The liquid hydrocarbon is contained in a sight-feed reservoir F and is supplied through a pipe 48 to a cup 41 in the bottom of the workholding receptacle D wherein it is vaporized, the vapour passing through a hole 29 in the inverted bucket-shaped member 28, past a baffle 30 supported thereon, and into the space D through the perforations in the stand 26. The residual vapour, from which carbon has been absorbed by the work, is permitted to escape through a hole 19 in the removable cover 17 of the receptacle D where it is ignited, the colour of the flame giving an indication of the rate of penetration by showing the extent to which carbon has been removed from the issuing gas.
