Abstract

277,318. Booth, W. N. Sept. 7, 1926, [Convention date]. Suspension-spoke wheels; spokes, securing and adjusting; attaching to permanent hubs.-A detachable wheel is secured to a permanent hub by means adapted to increase the tension of the wheel-spokes. In the construction shown, the wheel comprises two crossed sets of spokes 3, 4 rigidly secured to the rim 1 and with coned heads engaging tapered holes in flanges 28, 29 of the detachable hub 11. The latter comprises a radial flange 13 secured by bolts 17 to a flange 18 of the permanent hub 10, to which a brake-drum 22 may also be attached, and a coned shoulder 32 engaging a coned seating 31 on the hub 10. The flange 13 is normally off-set so as to be constrained by the nuts 19 of the bolts 17 whereby the wheel spokes are additionally tensioned when the flange 13 is forced against the flange 18. In assembling the wheel, the spokes are entered from the hub and the rim is displaced to either side of its normal position to receive radial tenons 26 on the outer ends of the spokes whereby the initial tension is set up in the latter. Caps closing outer ends of hubs.-The inner hub 10 is closed by a thin metal cap 37, Fig. 5, pressed into position, and an outer hub-cap 34, Fig. 2. 36, Fig. 5, screwed on the hub 10 is formed with an enlargement 33 to engage the outer hub.
