Variable-speed friction gearing. - A friction wheel consists of two substantially concentric rings 11, 13, Fig. 3, separated by balls or conical or other rollers 14 engaging inclined surfaces 12 on the inner ring, by cams 33 as in Fig. 5, or by links, so that the frictional grip upon the co-operating gear member 24 tightens with the load, the ring 13 moving from a position slightly eccentric to the ring 11 to a concentric position during such action. The wheel is carried in bearings sliding on rods 21, 21a and is traversed across the face of a disc 24 by a screw 23 for speed variation. The disc 24 is secured on a shaft 25 and is axially adjustable by a sleeve 26 screwed into the casing 6<a>. The wheel may engage the rim of its co-operating disc, which may be conical, or may be pivoted on a conveyercarriage and roll along a stationary friction track. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the friction wheel 38 grips a conveyer belt 39 passing over an ordinary pulley 40. Wire &c. to be fed may be gripped in a similar manner. The invention may be applied to centrifugal machines.
