Variable-speed epicyclic gearing .-In a pile-raising or napping machine having the napping rollers 3, 4 arranged in the form of a rotatable drum, half the rollers 3 having conical friction rollers 5 at one end. and the other half 4 having conical friction rollers 6 at the other end to engage stationary friction rings 7, 8 which can be adjusted axially along the conical rollers 5, 6 to vary the speed of the napping rollers 3, 4, each ring 7, 8 is made of iron or other elastic material and has a single gap X which allows it to be expanded and contracted by bending to engage the conical rollers 5, 6 in all positions. The rings 7, 8 are adjusted axially by means of screws 13, 14 connected by chain and toothed gearing 30 with a handle 29. The handle 29 may also be connected through gearing 30, 31 and a screwed shaft 16 with one of two intergeared levers 17, 18 connected to the ends of each ring 7 or 8 so that the rings are adjusted in diameter when they are adjusted axially. Buffer springs 27, 28 are provided between the lever 17 and stops on the shaft 16. The rings 7, 8 preferably have smooth surfaces while the rollers 5, 6 have frictional coatings.
