Pile or nap, raising.-In a drum cloth-raising machine, the friction driving discs for the raising-cylinders a.re capable of radial adjustment with respect to the drum and within the axially-stationary driving belt or ring whereby the speed of the cylinders is varied. As shown in Fig. 1, the casings 4 of the bearings of the raising- cylinders 1 are formed as sleeves adjustably rotatable in the star frame 2 of the drum of raising-cylinders and provided with hollow rotating pins 5 which carry different-sized friction driving discs 8, 9 and are connected bv a flexible connection 7 with the cylinders 1. The sleeves are provided with teeth 12 meshing with teeth on a wheel 13 having internal inclined teeth meshing with teeth on a sleeve 16 splined at 116 to a sleeve on the frame 2. The sleeve 16 is moved axially by a non- rotatable sleeve 17 in screw engagement with a chain wheel 18 operated by a hand-wheel. When the wheel 18 is rotated, the sleeve 16 is moved axially and causes rotation of the wheel 13 relative to the frame 2. The friction discs 8, 9 are thereby moved axially within a stationary resilient driving ring 10. Flanged bearing discs 14 for engaging the driving ring and adjustable radially with the raising-cylinder, may be provided. Instead of friction discs 8, 9, belt discs 110 may be employed. When a driving-belt is employed instead of the driving ring 10, it may be stationary, one end being fixed while the other is tensioned by a weight. In some cases, the belt is driven by a pulley geared to the drum through toothed wheels, whereby the speed may be varied. Oppositely rotating brushes for cleaning the cylinders are also driven from the drum by toothed gearing and are mounted on radius arms so that they remain constantly in mesh.
