Extracting.-Titaniferous materials are heated with a reducing agent, with or without magnesium, alkali, or alkaline earth compounds, to reduce iron present without appreciably reducing titanium, and then treated with an acid solvent, such as 74 per cent sulphuric acid, which dissolves or renders soluble only the titanium; from the product iron may be recovered, as by magnetic means preferably in presence of bases or flotation agents. Solid, liquid, or gaseous reducing agents may be used.
