Cutting slices in succession. - A rotary-knife of any type is provided with means for warming the substance to be sliced, in order to facilitate the operation in cold weather. Gas or hot waker may be employed, but an electric heater is preferred. In a reciprocating-table machine, an electric heater 10 may be mounted on the frame A so as to be below a, large opening 11 in the moving carriage C when this is remote from the rotary knife B, heat then passing through the opening 11 to the feed plate E. The heater has two resistances, which can be placed in circuit separately or in parallel by a four-position switch 13. Further regulation may be obtained by fitting a shutter or damper in the opening 11 of the carriages. In a modification, the heater is mounted within the opening 11, and supplied with current through sliding contacts.
