In an immersion heater of the kind in which one or more heating elements are attached to a head which is provided with an overall cover and is adapted to be secured in the external wall of a vessel, a thermostatically, controlled switch 10 embodying a bi-metallic strip 11 is mounted in a container 7 removably located in the head 4 of the heater. The unit consisting of the container and the thermal switch may thus be removed and replaced as desired. The container is located on a shoulder 6 and is secured by means of a nut on a stud 14. A cover 8 for the container is preferably of heat insulating material.
