Tunnels and shafts.- Segments for lining tunnels and shafts have the usual circumferential flanges but end flanges are omitted, and connecting pieces are located between the webs and/or flanges of adjacent segments. The connecting pieces may each comprise a plate 1, Figs. 2 and 3, of a length equal to the width of the segments 2 and provided with lips 3 between which the webs of the adjacent segments 2 are received ; a flange 4, preferably centrally thickened, is also provided and lugs 5 which abut against, and are bolted to, the flanges of the segments 2. The plate 1 may be apertured. Key pieces for completing rings of segments comprise channel members 6 which may be of a length equal to that of the segments, or shorter, the web of the member 6 being thicker than that of the segments against which it abuts and having plane or grooved ends. The ends of the side flanges' of a key piece may be parallel or radial. The key pieces are connected to the segments by fish plates 7, opposite fish plates being connected by distance pieces 8 which may be integral or separate. Lead, bituminous felt &c. packing 9 is provided in all joints. The segments of adjacent rings preferably break joint; further, the segments may be formed by rolling a flanged ring which is then divided. In the initial erection of a lining, small bolts may be used; later the bolt holes are reamed out and close-fitting bolts applied. Further, the various parts may be connected by welding.
