Heating by electricity. - A flexible electric heating device, especially adapted to be buried in the soil of a garden bed for warming growing plants, consists of a conducting core of highresistance material with an insulating coating of mica, asbestos &c. and an outer protecting sheath of magnetic material chosen to have a high hysteresis and eddy-current loss, and made with as large an unbroken surface as possible. The cable so formed may contain two or more conductors.
