Abstract
273,037. Electrical Improvements, Ltd., and Grant, L. C. April 8, 1926. Protective arrangements.-A conducting body connected directly or through a spark gap or condenser to a power line is arranged on or near or buried in the earth in such a way as to constitute therewith a condenser having such dielectric hysteresis as to cause the dissipation of a considerable portion of surge energy and prevent a dangerous amount being fed back into the line. The conducting body may be bare where the nature of the soil itself is suitable or it may be enclosed in concrete or like poor dielectric. Two forms are described. As shown in Fig. 1 wire, strip &c. conductors A radiating from a centre are bent up into a common bundle to form a lead-down to which the line is connected and the whole is encased in concrete. The form shown in Fig. 3 is a net H of wires on a framework supported upon insulators 0 above suitable earth. The conductors in each form may be bare or insulated, a horn gap G in series being prerferred in the former case to limit the leakage of power current.
