Cam-actuated pumps; regulating delivery : disconnecting actuating mechanism. - In means for starting, stopping, and controlling Diesel or like engines in which a single control is provided to enable a fuel pump and a starting- air valve to be put into or out ot operation separately or together, the capacity of a fuel reservoir 10 on the pressure side of the fuel pump is variable according to the rate at which fuel is fed to the engine cylinder. The piston 7 of the fuel pump is worked by a lever 5 actuated by a cam 1, and lever 25 actuated by the pump piston controls the starting-air valve 31. For lifting the lever 5 at will from the cam 1, and for adjusting the pivot of the valve lever 25, a lever 18 is pivoted at 17 and connected by a rod 19 to an eccentric 21 adjusted by a handle 22, a slot 24 in the lever 25 being engaged by a pin on the rod 19. In the normal position E of the handle 22, the lever 25 is clear of the starting valve 31 and the lever 18 is inactive,; in the starting position F, the lever 25 actuates the valve 31, and in the stopping position G, the lever 25 is clear of the valve 31 and the lever 18 lifts the lever 5 from the cam 1, putting the pump out of action. In order to control the amount of fuel delivered by the pump, the fuel reservoir 10 is provided with a piston bearing against a lever 12 which is pivoted at 11 and bears at the other end against a bevelled stop 14 movable longitudinally. The stop 14 bears against a lever 36 pivoted at 35 on the pump guide 34 and connected by a spring 37 to the lever 5. Between the lever 36 and a lever 33 pivoted on the opposite side of the guide 34 is a roller 38 connected to the governor of the engine.
