Bedsteads convertible into couches; expanding bedsteads. - A couch or single bed which can be converted into twin beds, with a substantial space therebetween, comprises end frames 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 25, 28, connected together by longitudinal bars 19, a lower vertically movable bed frame C and an upper movable bed frame D mounted to swing on pivoted arms 41, 42. As the frame D is swung over into the position shown in Fig. 1, where it is supported by end boards 95, the frame C is simultaneously raised by rollers 55 on arms 51 engaging arcuate surfaces 56 on brackets 57 secured to the frame C. Springs 60, 61 are provided to assist the movement of the parts, and the frame C is further supported by pivoted links 67, 68. The common pivots 70 of these links engage slots 77 in a lock bar 75, springs 82 raising the bar and engaging the pivots 70 in slot extensions 80 when the frame C is fully raised, and a bracket. 90 engaging an extension 91 and freeing the pivots 70 from the slot extensions 80 when the, frame C is being lowered. The vertical movement, of the frame C is sufficient, to allow all bedding to, remain in position during conversion.
