Synchronizing dynamo - electric machines. - For starting a synchronous dynamoelectric machine a motor is used in which one or more primary phases have two independent windings magnetically interlinked. At starting both may be connected to the supply circuit in parallel but at a speed approaching synshronisim one winding may be disconnected and connected to the terminals or slip rings of the synchronous machine so that the currents included in that winding are employed in synchronizing. The separate windings may be wound in common slots or in separate portions A, B of slots formed as in Fig. 6. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement for starting a rotary converter in which only one winding is used at starting by closing switches 7, 8; near synchronism a switch 27 is closed on to contacts 30 to put the second winding in series with the converter armature and later the switch 27 is fully closed and the switch 8 opened to cut out the starting motor. Fig. 10 shows a repulsion motor arranged for starting a single-phase motor. Demagnetization and reversal of the field polarity of converters are stated to be avoided.
