Abstract

165,961. British Thomson - - Houston Co., Ltd., and Whitaker, F. P. April 9, 1920. Rotary converters. - Correct polarity is ensured in starting-up a rotary converter, and especially one started by an induction motor the stator windings of which are in series with the converter armature, by an electromagnetic switch which is operated by the converter voltage or the field current or voltage to open or reverse the field circuit if the converter polarity is incorrect. In the form shown, the shunt field coil 3 of the converter 2 is in series with the armature coil 6 and contacts 7, 8 of a polarized switch 4. With correct polarity of the converter the armature holds the contacts 7, 8 closed, but if the polarity is reversed the field circuit is opened. The switch may alternatively be arranged to reverse the field current.
