Abstract

253,346. General Electric Co., Ltd., and Garrard, C. C. May 22, 1925. Rotary converters.-In starting a synchronous motor, as in a motor converter, three-phase rotor windings 10, 11, 12 are connected through sliprings to external windings 31, 32, 33, arranged on a magnetic core, and when the machine approaches synchronous speed a switch 34 is closed across one of the three windings so as to produce a synchronizing torque due to the magnetizing effect of the unbalanced windings. The connections are made through ohmic resistances 28, 29, 30, and part or the whole of the resistance 30 is short-circuited together with the winding 33. The magnetizing effect may be obtained by altering the relative numbers of turns on the phases instead of by short-circuiting. Specification 10841/13, [Class 38 (ii), Electric currents, Converting &c.], is referred to.
