Silica; hydrochloric acid.-Solid adsorbents are produced by treating an insoluble silicate such as a zeolite with an acid, preferably until a gel is formed, washing the product before or after partially or completely drying it, and gradually heating it, for instance to 220‹ C. The zeolite may be treated with acid so as to obtain a product having the granular structure of the zeolite, but better results are obtained by continuing the treatment until a gel is formed, previous to which a sol may be formed as an intermediate product. An example describes the treatment of a sodium zeolite with hydrochloric acid of 11 per cent strength. The jelly is washed and gradually heated to 220‹ C. The product may be employed for removing organic materials from gaseous hydrochloric acid obtained in chlorinations. Specification 221,487 is referred to.
