Silica.-Silica gel is prepared by kneading a silica hydrogel containing 78-95 per cent water with a colloidal solution of silica, moulding, and. drying at 110-180‹ C. The quantity of colloidal solution may be 1-2 per cent of 1-10 per cent strength. Alternatively, silica hydrogel containing 60-95 per cent of water may be heated in an autoclave at 100-300‹ C., for instance at 150‹ C., when part of the hydrogel dissolves as a colloidal solution. The product is moulded and dried as before.
