Abstract

259,950. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Oct. 16, 1925, [Convention date]. Urea-formaldehyde condensation products are hardened bv treatment with sulphur dioxide in the gaseous or dissolved state and with or without the use of heat. When the hardening agent is in the gaseous state, pressure may be employed; the solution may be in water or a non- aqueous solvent. The process is also applicable to condensation products of derivatives of urea with formaldehyde and to mixtures of the same. Examples are given according to which a condensation product prepared from urea and formaldehyde is (1) exposed as a film on a plate to gaseous sulphur dioxide, (2) prepared in the fibre form in the same way as artificial silk, and hardened by passage through an atmosphere of sulphur dioxide or a solution of the same in acetone. The products are also useful as lacquers and insulating materials. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to condensation products of urea and formaldehyde prepared in the presence of mono- and di-sodium phosphates and includes an example according to which such a condensation product is poured into a prismatic mould, and after a preliminary heating, removed and exposed to gaseous sulphur dioxide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
