Abstract
Alkali metal or ammonium sulphites or bisulphites are converted to thiosulphates by means of sulphur or alkali metal or ammonium polysulphides, the thiosulphates are converted to polythionates by means of sulphur dioxide, and the polythionates heated to obtain sulphates and sulphur, if necessary after addition of further sulphite or bisulphite. The sulphur obtained may be re-used in the process, and the sulphur dioxide necessary be obtained by burning a part of the sulphur, or when bisulphites are present in the initial material, be in part that recovered in the first step of the process. Sulphur may be recovered from the final solutions by heating them under pressure until the sulphur liquefies. Examples refer to the use in the process of ammonium sulphite with or without bisulphite, and of potassium bisulphite or sulphite. In the latter case the addition of ammonium sulphite before carrying out the final step of the process gives a mixture of ammonium and potassium sulphates which may be used as a fertilizer. Specification 5838/11, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds, other than &c.], is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification any substance containing or supplying sulphur may be used in the first step of the process.
