Abstract

A fertilizer is obtained by acting with sulphur dioxide and ammonia substantially in the proportions by volume of 1 : 2, or gas mixtures containing these substances in corresponding proportions, on an aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate whereby a double salt having the formula NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO3 is formed which separates in a solid form if the solution is sufficiently concentrated. This double salt may be used as a fertilizer by itself or as a constituent of mixed fertilizers or it may be oxidized before use, e.g. by merely exposing it to the air or by treating it with heated air.ALSO:A fertilizer is obtained by acting with sulphur dioxide and ammonia substantially in the proportions by volume of 1 : 2, or gas mixtures containing these substances in corresponding proportions, on an aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate whereby a double salt having the formula NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO3 is formed which separates in a solid form if the solution is sufficiently concentrated.
