Abstract
279,863. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Oct. 26, 1926, [Convention date]. Horn, artificial.-Casein, with or without a filling or colouring material, clarifying agent or softtening agent, is hardened by treatment with glyoxal or a homologue thereof, or with a derivative of glyoxal capable of decomposing into glyoxal or a homologue thereof during the process. In an example, 100 grams of rennet-casein are mixed with 10 grams of methyldiphenylamine, and 10 grams of glyoxal of 50 per cent containing 7 per cent of acetic acid for 24 hours at ordinary temperature, and the mass is pressed into buttons at 120‹ C. In another example buttons are made from 100 grams of rennet-casein, 2 grams of softening-agent, and 18 grams of glyoxal of 30 per cent containing 8 per cent of sodium acetate. It is stated that 100 molecules of the casein are hardened by 40-43 molecules of the aldehyde.
