Albumens; formaldehyde.-In the manufacture of a horn-like substance from albuminous materials, a hardening medium is added to the moistened albuminous material before or during plastification, the hardening medium being such that its action is developed only after plastification and moulding are completed. Such a medium is paraformaldehyde which has been treated with an acid. According to an example, paraformaldehyde is dissolved at 95‹ C. in 35-40 per cent sulphuric acid, and the product is separated by cooling, and washed. This is mixed with moist casein, and the mixture is treated in the usual way. Formic acid is also specified as a suitable acid for treating the paraformaldehyde.
