Abstract
An irreversible alkaline silicic acid sol for use in the manufacture of paints is prepared by grinding in an alkaline solution. Thus, silicic acid obtained by the action of acid on a soluble silicate may be ground in alkali; or sand or silica may be ground and heated with water, and the product ground with a solution of alkali. Silica or diatomaceous earth may also be peptised by grinding in solutions of water-glass. The alkali content of the peptising agent must be sufficiently low to ensure that on drying the product shall be insoluble in water. In an example, 895 parts of 30 per cent sodium silicate of high silica content is agitated with 174.3 parts of dilute hydrochloric acid. The precipitated silicic acid containing adsorbed alkali is washed, and slowly added to 275 parts of sodium silicate in a pan mill, water being added as required.ALSO:An irreversible alkaline silicic acid sol may be prepared by grinding in an alkaline solution, silicic acid obtained by the action of acid on a soluble silicate; or by grinding and heating sand or silica with water, and grinding the product with a solution of alkali.
