Abstract

543,202. Core materials. NICOLSON, J. Aug. 27, 1940, No. 13524. [Class 83 (i)] Core material, stated to retain its plasticity for rammed or blown cores over long periods, comprises sand, oil, borax, and the product obtained from starch containing protein by thinning and partly cooking or gelatinising. A water suspension of 30-35 per cent maize, 2-15 per cent protein content may be heated to 50‹ C., hydrochloric acid added until 10 ccs. of the filtered liquid will neutralize 14-16 ccs. of deci-normal sodium hydrate solution. Heating is continued for 15-20 hours while agitating. Tests are made meanwhile, by the Scott method of estimating fluidity, on 65 grams of the starch, neutralized and dried, mixed with 280 c.c.s. of water. When a fluidity of between 40-50 is reached heating is stopped and the starch neutralized to pH 6-6.8 with soda ash. Ten to 15 per cent of borax, calculated on dry starch, is then added to the starch suspension which is partly cooked, dried on film-drying cylinders, ground to pass a 30 mesh sieve, and mixed with core oil, a suitable oil being 50 parts linseed, 30 rosin oil, and 20 bitumen. Alternatively the borax is added with the oil after drying. In a modification the dextrine process may be used for thinning. If bitumen is omitted, anti-oxidants, such as phenol-betanaphthol, hydroquinone, or pyrogallol, or antiseptics, such as formaldehyde or cresol, or both, may be added to prevent hardening and rancidity. Specification 515,470 is referred to.
