Abstract

426,077. Core materials. LORD, W. M., Lower Laith, Halifax Road, Todmorden, Yorkshire. Jan. 3,1934, No. 198. [Class 83 (i)] A binder for sand cores comprises an aqueous emulsion of a drying oil, such as linseed, tung, soya bean, or cotton seed oil, and a water soluble silicate, with or without an adhesive, such as starch, dextrine, bentonite, glue, linseed oil mucilage, or water soluble methyl cellulose. An emulsifier, such as common soap, hydroxyalkylamine soap, an amide or arylide of a higher fatty acid, or a mixture of palmitic and stearic alcohols, and an antiseptic, such as phenol or mercuric chloride, may be added. To 200 c.cs. of hot water may be added in succession with agitation 2 grams of bentonite, 3 of sodium silicate, 5 of rice starch, 4 of soap, 6 of stearoanilide, 10 of sulphite waste liquor, 14 of dextrine and then 200 c.cs. of raw linseed oil. The Provisional Specification describes binders in which the silicate is omitted.
