Abstract

Base-exchanging substances are obtained from clays, particularly British clays, by treating them with concentrated hydrochloric acid or with sulphuric acid of the equivalent concentration, removing adherent acid if desired, drying and grading, heating in an oxidizing atmosphere, say to 550--600 DEG C. and treating the product with a sodium silicate-sodium aluminate solution. The last step may be carried out by boiling the mixture, and may be followed by treatment with a common salt solution. According to the Provisional Specification, the initial treatment with acid may be omitted, and all the treatments with liquids may take place at reduced, normal, or increased pressures.
