330,368. Doerbecker, W. April 29, 1029. Sterilizing fruit juices.-Fruit juices are sterilized by adding a suitable preservative and subjecting the mixture to the action of ultra-violet rays. The combined effect of the two sterilizing means permits a small amount of preservative and a short exposure to the rays to be used. In an example, 30 kg. of raspberry syrup made of raspberry juice and sugar is diluted with water and 0.2 gm. of sodium benzoate in aqueous solution added, after which it is treated for a few seconds with ultra-violet rays.
