Abstract

265,659. Bernhard, K. July 25, 1925. Movable-abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off.-An internal combustion engine is supplied with fuel mixture of uniform composition and the degree of compression of the mixture is varied according to the load, being lowest for light loads and increased for heavy loads, in some cases to a degree producing spontaneous ignition. The rotary engine shown in Section in Fig. 1 is supplied with the fuel mixture by a rotary compressor shown in section in Fig. 2, the compressor having a by-pass q with a valve that is governed by a speed regulator. The fuel mixture is supplied to the compressor through a valve inlet z and compressed by a piston n which passes through a rotary abutment o. The compressed gas is forced through valve i operated by a tappet and through a non-return valve g of the engine into the explosion chamber behind the piston K. The engine is provided with an exhaust passage h and hinged abutment b. The pressure in the engine is gradually increased owing to the larger construction of the pump. When the power developed by the engine is sufficient to maintain or increase a predetermined speed, a speed regulator adjusts the valve of the passage q to by-pass part of the compressed gas to the other side of the abutment o of the compressor, and so reduce the pressure of the gas that is being supplied to the engine cylinder. The pump has a safety valve s. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 11554/99, 15885/00; 1839/11 and 5178/11, [both in Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for]; 20917/13; and 213,243, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for].
