Abstract
262,181. White, A. E., (Thompson, C. E.). Sept. 3, 1925. Waste gases and combustion products, treatment and disposal of.- Noxious gases resulting from combustion of fuel are eliminated by commingling such gases with an oxidizing agent, initiating combustion by an external source of heat and continuing and maintaining combustion by heat derived from the burning gases within the influence of a catalysing agent. As applied to the treatment of engine exhaust, the exhaust pipe 3 projects into a casing 4 having a tapered nozzle portion which in conjunction with a bell-mouthed portion 4<1>, forms an injector which may draw through the inlet 6 either air from a chamber 12, or combustible mixture from the engine manifold through a pipe 8 according as to which of the valves 10, 13 is open. The mixed gases pass through a pipe 5 to a secondary combustion chamber 11 which may be the muffler and which is surrounded by the air chamber 12 communicating with the atmosphere at 12<1>. The exhaust is discharged at 19. The primary combustion space 5 contains a catalytic member 14, and a spark plug 15 in a circuit comprising a battery 16, interrupter 17 and switch 18. Assuming exhaust gases to be flowing valve 10 is opened switch 18 closed and the mixture is ignited and burns in the secondary combustion chamber 11. This is allowed to continue for a time sufficient to heat the chamber 12 and the catalyzer, after which valve 19 is closed and valve 13 opened. If the heat of combustion is insufficient to render the catalyzer active, it may be heated by a separate circuit 21 - 23. Should the combustion fail, the dilution by air of the gases will render them less obnoxious. By embedding the apparatus in insulation 20 contained in a casing 1, the heat of combustion may be conserved and, in addition to heating the air chamber 12, may be utilized for other purposes e.g. heating a car. The amount of heat may be increased by continuing the supply of mixture through the pipe 8.
