Abstract

1,165,917. Treating exhaust gases. TRI-SCIENCES INDUSTRIES Inc. Oct. 8, 1966, No. 45070/66. Heading F1B. In an exhaust gas after-burner wherein air mixed with exhaust gases at a low-pressure region downstream of a restriction 113 is ignited by an igniter 128 downstream of a baffle 126, the entering air supplied by a pump 125 is heated by the combustion products leaving the after-burner. The combustion products flow through annular passages 131, 134, in heat exchange relationship with the air flowing towards the combustion chamber through passage 122. A second igniter 127 is provided upstream of the baffle 126 and the combustion products are guided into passage 131 by a second baffle 129. Crank-case fumes may be admitted through pipe 117. The pump 125 is engine driven and its output is controlled from the accelerator pedal 141. The igniters 127, 128, are cooled by the entering air and are preferably supplied by a Piezo-electric source 143 actuated by a camoperated arm 145 which may be lifted off the cam when not needed either manually or by temperature responsive devices in the afterburner.
