Abstract
1,140,757. Preventing corrosion. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 11 Oct., 1966 [29 Oct., 1965], No. 45431/66. Heading F4B. [Also in Division F1] To enable a residual petroleum fuel containing a high concentration of sulphur and ash-forming constituents to be used in a gas turbine engine without excessive corrosion and fouling, the fuel is burnt at a high temperature in the primary zone I of the flame tube 40 of the combustion chamber with an amount of primary air which is within the range 0 to 3% excess air. Steam is introduced from a pipe 4 into the space 32 between the flame tube 40 and an inner jacket 50 and, after cooling the walls of the primary zone I, flows through slots or louvres 5 into a secondary zone II to mix with the combustion gases and cool them. Further cooling is provided by secondary air which passes through the space 31 between the inner jacket 50 and an outer jacket 30 and enters a tertiary zone III through apertures or slots 6. The exhaust gases from the turbine 80 are passed through a waste heat boiler 70 to generate the steam. In addition, auxiliary fuel may be burnt for this purpose in a boiler which may be separate from, or a part of, the boiler 70.
