Abstract
262,069. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Ruggles, W. A.). Nov. 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Vacuum tubes.- A device for producing or maintaining a high vacuum comprises a rod 15 of an alkaline-earth metal, such as calcium. enclosed in a perforated nickel tube 10 and surrounded by a heating filament 7. The calcium is thus distilled through openings 14 in the tube on to the enclosing walls, and the metallic layer so deposited absorbs water vapour or other gas. The bulb is attached to a thermionic valve by means of the neck 3, or if desired may be used alone as a two-element rectifier by mounting the tube 10 on a separate lead-in wire 9. The calcium rod 15 is coated with magnesium to allow it to be exposed to the atmosphere for a limited period.
