Abstract
261,605. Harkness, W. F., and Davies, F. March 17, 1926. Variable resistances.-Contact is made with a helicallycoiled wire by a resilient metal member pressed against the wire by a wiper on a rotating arm. In the arrangement shown the resilient member consists of a disc e arranged behind the wire a and pressed against it by a wiper h on an arm g carried by a spindle d. The spindle d can be moved longitudinally so as to raise the wiper h from the disc e and break the circuit, and can be held in either the " on " or " off " position bv a spring engaging with one of two grooves in the spindle. In a modification the disc e is replaced by a strip of metal surrounding the wire and pressed radially inwards by a chamfered wiper.
