Abstract

Collectors. - Rheostats of the type in which coarse adjustment is effected by relative sliding movement between a contact member and the resistance and fine adjustment is effected by relative rotary movement are provided with a spring-pressed contact-making metal ball. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the resistance wire 2 is carried by the inner surface of an ebonite or other insulating cylinder 1. Contact arms 5 are carried by a spindle 4 which is mounted so as to slide and rotate in a plug 3. Contact with the spindle 4 is effected by a spring- pressed metal ball 13. A portion of the cylinder 1 projects beyond the wire 2 at one end 7 so that the circuit may be broken. There may be one, two, or three contact arms 5, of which only one need be electrically connected to the spindle 4. In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the resistance wire 2 is wound on the outer surface of an insulating cylinder 18, the far end being connected to the spindle 4. Contact with the resistance wire 2 is effected bv four spring-pressed balls 19 arranged in a metal ring 20. The spindle 4 mav be calibrated along its length, and a calibrated disc may be mounted on the stem 11 to cooperate with an indicating mark on the operating- knub 10.
